2nd and 3rd Grade BG Students Learn about Local Government

Press Release Provide by Bonnie Gilberti

Students from Daybreak Primary School in Battle Ground are learning about city government through a partnership with the City of Battle Ground named “City for a Day”. Students in Mrs. Sibley’s second and third-grade class gained firsthand knowledge of the City’s council-manager form of government by recreating their own city government complete with citizens, city council and staff.

The project culminated with the students taking charge at the April 16th City Council Study Session when they stepped into the shoes of the City Council, senior staff and citizens in a mock city council meeting. The student “City for a Day” council studied the feasibility of creating an Environment Education Center/Interpretive Trail. Each student was accompanied by his or her real-life counterpart councilmember or staff person during the meeting. Students playing the role of citizens provided thoughtful public testimony to the council.

Battle Ground Mayor Lisa Walters said the experience was wonderful. “These kids were so great; they were creative and showed a lot of understanding with their questions and responses.”
